  • Halloween 2017

    Halloween 2017

The weather is cooling down and the nights are drawing slowly in. The leaves are changing into beautiful colours as they dance around in the crisp air gently falling down, creating a magical scenery around us. It might be time to wrap up but the holiday season is just heating up. As we have entered October, here at Minimis we are getting very excited about Halloween. This is one of our favourite times of year as families can have so much fun together, being it dressing up, arts and crafts, spooky movies or snacks and parties.

This is also an exciting time for watching our favourite celebrities and what they might decide to dress up as for this spooky event. Minimis have looked back on some of our celebrities and their children and the costumes they decided to wear and would love to share these with the Minimis Family for inspiration.
We would also love to see your little ones and their costumes for Halloween so please tag us @minimis.co.uk.

  • Hackett in Focus

Here at Minimis we value the importance of the history and the story behind each individual designer we offer. Each brand is carefully selected with lots of thought behind it which is why Minimis decided to take on Hackett for the Spring/Summer season 2017 and beyond. Hackett is renowned for being authentically British and is recognised as a quality worldwide brand. The brand was first established in 1979 and has gone from strength to strength in its pursuit to continue creating classic, polished clothes.

The collection available on our website ranges from 2 to 10 years and reflects the menswear classic, timeless look. Hackett incorporates the need for extreme quality yet durable with the all important classic cuts and British style to maintain the mature “Mini Me” look.

Interview with Hackett’s Senior Designer and Head of Children’s Wear Laura

How would you best describe the Hackett brand?

A quintessentially British brand that is authentic to its roots. The children’s wear range aims to evoke British heritage with a modern twist.

Where do you get your inspiration from to create the children’s collection?

I am always inspired by vintage clothing because I think it's really exciting as a designer to take heritage items and inject modern flare into the design. It's all about balance - mixing the hero stand-out pieces with more commercial elements while making sure the “little gentleman” look isn’t too serious or old fashioned.

I love London and find it hugely inspiring, especially as we are a British brand. East London has a great creative buzz and has plenty of vintage stores and small boutiques with Japanese influences (the Japanese have fantastic attention to detail). In West London, the vibe around Notting Hill and Portobello antiques markets also inspires me creatively.

This season our two main creative ideas were around Henley and Saunton Sands beach in Devon. For Henley we went back to basics and looked at our trusted polo shirts which are pieced and usually quite heavily branded to give a preppy feel. We researched the history of Henley and tried to capture the romance and prestige of the regatta and develop a mini-me range that was comfortable too.

Devon was about creating that sun-drenched, washed-out look. I wanted our garments to give the impression that they had been lying in the sun all day. It was a more relaxed capsule for the season, a colour palette of muted, complimentary shades of pastel colours.

Aston Martin racing continues every season and takes a more sporty/modern approach - this season the bright yellow highlight shines through in zip tapes, graphics, linings and bar tacks

We at Minimis love the Mini Me items that Hackett designs for each season. How closely do you work with the adult department in ensuring these iconic items?

We work very closely with the menswear team, insuring that mini me or sometimes maxi me pieces are aligned,  themes and colours always filter down to what we adjust for the kidswear market. It's always important for the Hackett chap to dress like daddy!

What is the best part of working for Hackett?

The best part of working for Hackett is having a great team behind me. If you have a team where everyone is passionate and bouncing ideas off each other, you can be sure that the passion will filter into a great range that’s been designed with great care.  I also particularly love working for a British brand and it’s hard to beat the massive job satisfaction of seeing your range in stores.

Designing for kids is about having fun and not taking yourself too seriously. I like to think of our Hackett boy as a chap with an individual sense of style. It’s important to be fearless and not afraid to play with colour and pattern.  I don’t want them to look too polished, they are boys after all!

  • The Top Celebrities who posed Naked whilst Pregnant.

This week’s blog post brings you some of the most talked about and publicised celebrity naked pregnancy photo shoots.

Some women aren't aware of or ready for the physical changes they face when they become pregnant, some of the symptoms your expected to face when pregnant is breast tenderness, this is usually the first physical sign women tend to find when they become pregnant, which then leads onto morning sickness, higher senses of taste and smell, constant fatigue and needing to urinate more and more. With all of this in mind and as well as gaining weight and growing a small person inside you we take our hats off to any woman who can still look and feel great whilst heavily pregnant in front of a camera.

    1. Kourtney Kardashian’s naked pregnancy shoot for DuJour Magazine when she was pregnant with her second child Penelope shows off her gorgeous olive skin and a beautifully neat bump in an artistic shoot that left her only wearing a feather necklace.

When asked what she thought people’s reactions would be to this shoot Kourtney opened up ‘I don’t know. It’s what a woman’s body is made to do, so I hope it’s maybe seen as something that’s artistic. This was something that initially I did for myself just to capture the moment in my life, but these photos are beautiful and I’m happy to share them. And I like how raw they are. It’s my body: I’m not trying to impress anybody or be something that I’m not. But in general, I don’t really care that much about what people think. It doesn’t rule my world. I did this because I wanted to and it made me happy.’

    1. Alicia Keys also posed naked for a pregnancy photo shoot when she was pregnant with her second child to Swizz Beatz a music producer. This photo shoot was not for a glossy magazine but was used to raise awareness for Alicia Key’s charity ‘We Are Here Movement’ which is focused on making a more peaceful world for children, pushing for stricter gun laws and girl’s education to which she donated a million dollars. When asked on her reasons why this pregnancy shoot which pictures her naked with a white peace sign painted on her belly ‘It’s time to get people’s attention. People won’t be able to ignore this visual.’ Was Alicia’s response.

  • Janet Jackson Pregnant at 50 receives mixed reviews.

This week Janet Jackson has announced that she is pregnant with her first child two weeks before her 50th birthday. Here at Minimis we believe that all babies should be celebrated but unfortunately Janet has been the target of some mixed reviews because of her age.

According to a study for the Private Pregnancy UK Show the majority of British women believe it is ‘unnatural’ to have babies after the age of 44 and that it’s unfair on the child to have older parents. Many of the women who took part in the poll did not think that women over the age of 50 should be offered fertility assistance.

75% of women who entered the poll also stated that there isn’t enough fertility education available for women about not ‘leaving it too late’ to start a family, or about the options now available to help preserve a woman’s fertility.

Janet Jackson has put her world tour on pause while she concentrates on her family, she is married to Wissam Al Mana who she married in 2012 three years after her brother Michael's death. None of us know Janet's medical history and if she has tried to get pregnant previously, however if you are unable to conceive this can be a very personal and painful experience, sometimes women aren't in the right circumstances when they are younger to have children but if they can achieve this later in life then we salute you.

    janet jackson husband

Dr Amin Gorgy, fertility consultant and IVF specialist spoke out that scientifically 'The ideal age for women to become pregnant is in their twenties and early thirties. A woman’s fertility potential declines rapidly after the age of 35 and drops even faster after the age of 40.'

He added: ‘Successful egg freezing through vitrification has made it possible for women to postpone conception to later in life but as a society, we should be encouraging couples to have children at a younger age.'

‘In fact, I recommend that couples should aim to complete their families by the age of 35. There isn’t enough education available to women, many of whom still believe they can go on forever.’

  • Tommy Hilfiger Speaks Out About His Two Teenage Children With Autism.

In aid of Autism Awareness day earlier this month this week’s blog post see’s Minimis taking a look at one of our favourite designers from our children’s wear collection Tommy Hilfiger and his campaign alongside Autism Speaks to raise awareness of the condition.

For some of our readers who may not be aware, autism is a brain development disorder that appears within the first three years of a child’s life, affecting the development of social and communication skills. This physical condition is linked to abnormal chemistry in the brain and the causes of this abnormal activity is still unknown and continuously being researched within medical science today.

Minimis fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, is best known for owning a self-made high end fashion empire and rubbing shoulders with the A listers of the celebrity world, however in 2011 Tommy spoke out about his two teenage children having autism, both his 20 year old daughter Kathleen and his wife’s son Alex, aged 21 years were both diagnosed with autism as young children. Tommy said that having two children with similar difficulties has 'proved to be a comfort for each of them', he married his now wife, former model Dee in 2008 and has said ‘it is so unique to meet someone who has shared so many of the same struggles.’ ‘From the beginning we felt that this was just meant to be.’

The couple have had their work cut out for them as they share six children between them all aged between 32 years and 6 years old. Tommy is very much a family man and his happiest memories are spent at home relaxing with his family.

Tommy joined forces with Autism speaks as they share the same goal to put an end to the stigma of learning difficulties and autism, he has also spoken out about how proud he is of his 'really smart' daughter who has attended a special school.

In this day and age you would believe that children and schools would be accepting of all people however Tommy remembers when his daughter was a young child. 'She’d come and wake me up in the middle of the night and ask, "Am I intelligent?" or "Someone in school told me I was a retard, is that true?" It’s just heart-wrenching and I wish more people cared about it.'

'The government is not involved in it. People aren't donating enough money. There’s not enough research,' he said.

'There’s no cure. It needs help, so we've become involved.'

The concerns for children with autism also transcends into their adult life as it is difficult to know if they will ever be totally independent, as a parent all you want for your children is for them to grow up to be happy and healthy. Autism affects boys three times more than girls and is believed to affect 1 in every 88 American children, with such high statistics Minimis praises Tommy Hilfiger’s awareness campaign with Autism Speaks and we hope that one day there will no longer be a stigma attached to children with learning difficulties.

  • Kate Middleton speaks out about children and mental health.

"The mental health of our children must be seen as every bit as important as their physical health."

Kate Middleton has written a guest article for the Huffington Post this month, here she speaks out about the stigma and very present issues today of children with mental health problems.

"William and I would not hesitate to seek help for our children if they needed it."

Shortly after the Royal Wedding in April 2011, Kate Middleton started working with charities helping those affected by issues such as addiction, family breakdown and vulnerable children. Among these charities was 'Young Minds' the UK’s leading charity committed to improving the emotional well being and mental health of children and young people. For the first time Kate speaks out about some of the stories and cases she has witnessed.

"As was to be expected, I often heard some heart-breaking stories about lives that had been torn apart, with devastating impacts for all involved, particularly children."

Young Minds Matter is a campaign to give parents and children the right support they need which is easily accessible to help aid children with any emotional support they might need growing up. It is important to remember that mental health problems can come at any time in life for some people and often occur in adults from personal issues they had never addressed as children, mental health issues have not previously been spoken about publicly in older generations and now is time to change.

"Parenting is hard enough without letting prejudices stop us from asking for the help we need for ourselves and our children."

***MANDATORY BYLINE TO READ INFPhoto.com ONLY*** Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge leaving St Mary's Hospital in London, UK with the royal couple's second child. "Like most parents today, William and I would not hesitate to seek help for our children if they needed it. We hope to encourage George and Charlotte to speak about their feelings, and to give them the tools and sensitivity to be supportive peers to their friends as they get older. We know there is no shame in a young child struggling with their emotions or suffering from a mental illness."

Here at Minimis we admire the Princess' charity work and using her social standing to address and bring public awareness and support to this amazing cause.

If you would like more information about helping children with mental health issues get in contact with Young Minds Matter.
